In response to a problematic head gasket used on some first-generation Neon's, DaimlerChrysler began using Multi-Layered Steel (MLS) head gaskets to fix the problem. To see if your first-generation Neon has an MLS head gasket installed, follow the directions below for your vehicle type.

For SOHC Vehicles:
1)
Open hood and take a flashlight with you. Look behind the intake manifold between cylinders 1 and 2 to where the head meets the block. If you have an MLS head gasket you'll see a rounded metal tab with a rivet in the middle.
